THE WORKS OF THE FLESH

The works of the flesh
(Gal. 5:16-21)                     by pastor Jimmy              June 12, 2022

We heard about works of the flesh but we don¡¯t heard details about it and its definitions. The world spread and promote evils that helps the ¡°flesh¡± that even Christians adopted its deceptions. It is very important to know how Satan works in attracting our flesh. To defeat the enemy is to know him well and his schemes. Our flesh (body and mind) is like a magnet that takes all dirty and sensual activities in this world. Behind the flesh is the sinful nature. If you are happy with the works of the flesh, then you are not a true Christian. A true Christian always has a struggle because he has the Spirit of God in him and at the same time the sinful nature is at work. The purpose of this teaching message is for you to know, understand, hate, and avoid sins the flesh does so we can constantly walk glorifying God.

In these verses, we need to know four important things: 1) the sinful nature, 2) the flesh, 3) the conflict between the Spirit of God and the sinful nature in us, and 4) the works of the flesh. I will also give you biblical ways on how to overcome the sinful nature that keeps hindering our effectivity in serving God.

The sinful nature (v.17)

The sinful nature wants to do evil. It always craves doing what is wrong. It always opposes what the Spirit of God wants. Sinful nature has desires or wants or longing. The sinful nature always fights with the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we are not free to carry out our good intentions. Even John Knox, the founder of Presbyterian denomination in Scotland, in his old age, admitted his own personal battle with sin nature he inherited from Adam.

Why we have sinful nature?

The Bible makes it clear that humanity did not start out this way. The book of Genesis says that humankind was originally created good and perfect. Then God said, ¡°Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness¡± (Gen. 1:26-27). Because God is perfect, His creation, man is also perfect. Jesus said, ¡°A good tree cannot produce bad fruit¡± (Matt. 7:18), both Adam and Eve were created good and without sin. But, when they sinned, their nature was corrupted, and that nature was passed along to their offspring. ¡°When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.¡± (Gen. 5:3). It was emphasis that his son is no longer in God¡¯s likeness and image. It is no win Adam¡¯s likeness and image. Meaning, Seth inherited the sinful nature of his father Adam. If Adam did not sin against God, Seth has no sinful nature, he still possesses the nature of God in him. David confirms it and said, ¡°I was born to do wrong, as inner before I left my mother's womb¡± (Psa. 51:5). It means that his parents passed along a sin nature to him.

The flesh

We see how destructive sin is. The end result of sin is a nature often referred to as the ¡°flesh¡± in Scripture - something that opposes God and seeks sinful enjoyment. Pastor Mark Bubek defines the flesh this way: ¡°The flesh is a built-in law of failure, making it impossible for natural man to please or serve God. It is an uncontrollable inner force inherited from man¡¯s fall, which expresses itself in general and specific rebellion against God and His righteousness. The flesh can never be reformed or improved. The only hope for escape from the law of the flesh is its total execution and replacement by a new life in the Lord Jesus Christ.¡± Martin Luther commented that ¡°flesh¡± equates to affections and desires that run contrary to God, not only in the area of sexual activity, but in every area of life.

The war or the conflict: between the Spirit of God and the sinful nature in us

The expression of sinful nature is through our flesh. The flesh is able to manufacture sins. There is no other way. Sinful nature always works with the flesh. They are inseparable. That is why Paul said, the works of the flesh is very evident or obvious. He listed 17 works of the flesh(KJV): 1) Adultery, 2) fornication, 3) uncleanness, 4) lasciviousness, 5) Idolatry, 6) witchcraft, 7) hatred, 8) variance, 9) emulations, 10) wrath, 11) strife, 12) seditions, 13) heresies, 14) Envyings, 15) murders, 16) drunkenness, and 17) revellings (Gal. 5:19-21). These works of the flesh can be divided into three major categories: 1) The sensual sins: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, orgies, drunkenness, and lasciviousness. 2) The superstitious sins: idolatry and witchcraft. 3) The social sins: hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, sedition, heresies, envyings, and murders. Today I can discuss only four sensual sins.

Adultery is illicit or illegal sex between married people or sexual sins between married people. It is a defilement of the marriage bed. Jesus said, adultery is from the heart (Matt. 15:19). The word ¡®adultery¡¯ is related to the word adulterate, which means ¡°to render something poorer in quality by adding another substance.¡± Adultery is the adulteration of marriage by the addition of a third person. In simple words, when you commit adultery, you spoil, contaminate, or ruin your marriage which is instituted God by adding another woman or man. Satan is so crafty, to avoid adultery, he introduces polygamy. They legalized for one man to marry at least two. So before man¡¯s eyes adultery is no longer illegal, but it does destroy or adulterate God¡¯s original plan for marriage. Adultery is deadly serious sin and brings God¡¯s consequences. ¡°A man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroy himself¡± (Prov. 6:32). God will judge guilty those who commit sexual sins and adultery (Heb. 13:4a).

Fornication is sexual sins between unmarried people. The word ¡®fornication¡¯ comes from the Greek term porneia (from which we get our English word pornography). It is a general term for sexual immorality. In a list of horrendous sins in Romans 1:29, the apostle Paul includes fornication, referring to all kinds of sexual immorality. The sin of fornication violates the seventh commandment (Exodus 20:14), which was intended to safeguard the integrity of the family and the marriage union. God designed sex for marriage, and marriage to be a holy, valued, and honored institution. Abstaining from fornication was one of four conditions required of the Gentiles to be accepted into the early church by the Jerusalem conference (Acts 15:20).

Uncleanness is a filthiness of heart and mind that makes the person defiled. The unclean person sees dirt in everything (Tit. 1:15). Uncleanness is living with impurity of lustful, luxurious, and wasteful life. Unclean life is living unnatural practices like homosexuality and lesbianism (Rom. 1:24-27). Obviously, under this spirit of uncleanness are sensual sins. There are a lot of sensual sins produced by the flesh, but let me just give you two. The issues here are sensitive, but it needs to be exposed. The Bible says, ¡°have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove or expose them¡± (Eph. 5:11). If the church is silent, who will teach? Who can give biblical and spiritual guidance? The world is so aggressive in spreading and promoting these evil works of the flesh while the church is silent. It is not fair. Let me share what I discovered.

Molka (secretly filmed videos and pictures) - typically taken by individuals with cameras placed on shoes or clothing and aimed up women's skirts on public transport or escalators, or by micro cameras installed and hidden in toilets or changing rooms. The images and clips are then shared on private online groups or posted on specific porn sites (BBC news). Why men are doing this? According to Korea expose magazine, Molka is an easy way of expressing anger at women. It is a form of revenge of men to women.

Bestiality - describes sex between a human and an animal. Is this real? Yes! This was not included in the list of the lust of the flesh, but we can find four verses in the Old Testament. ¡°If a man has sexual relations with an animal, both the man and the animal must be put to death. If a woman has sexual relations with an animal, you must kill the woman and the animal. They must be put to death¡± (Lev. 20:15-16). I was so surprised because one European country legalized bestiality. The worst is there is one country that bestiality is legal while same sex marriage is illegal. These practices are rampant in European countries. If you look at the Bible, this is the continent where Paul preached the Gospel(churches sprouted) and where reformation started. Lesson: When the church backslides, the works of the devil abounds.

Lasciviousness is close to word debauchery. It speaks of wanton or malicious appetite that knows no shame. Lasciviousness also means ¡°excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures.¡± A person who practices lasciviousness justifies the act as an art. They don¡¯t feel shame. It is expressed the way they dress, when goal is to appear sexy or sensual (malibog). What else? Viewing sensual dancing in tiktok or in any social media platform. Viewing pornography, any movies, and television program that has sensuality or lust content. Lasciviousness spirit disregard for integrity and honor for selves and others. This is the behavior of the people in Sodom and Gomorrah (2Pet. 2:6-7). Under this spirit are homosexual, lesbianism, sexual harassment, agalmatophilia, exhibitionist, phidophile, flirting, suggestive touching, and inappropriate language (cat calls).

Let me end my message by giving you few biblical advices. In this chaotic life, there is an urgent call from God to walk in the Spirit and flee from immorality. ¡°Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh¡± (Gal.5:16). Before Paul discuss anything about sinful nature and the works of the flesh, he gave us first an advice. Paul said that let us yield freely and fully to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, by doing it, you can abandon the cravings of the lust of the flesh.

Practically speaking, when Joseph was tempted by Potiphar¡¯s wife, he flees. He literally ran away from a beautiful woman. We must keep running away from sexual immorality (1 Cor. 6:18). Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart (2Tim. 2:22). This verse suggests that it is not just running away to win; we also have something to do for our victory. What are we going to do? 1) Run as fast as you can from all the ambitions and lusts of youth; and 2) chase after all that is pure. 3) Build up your faith and 4) deepens your love. These must become your holy pursuit(chase or quest). 5) And live in peace with all those who worship our Lord Jesus with pure hearts. If we analyze this last verse, having constant fellowship and attending spiritual gatherings like the Lord¡¯s day and prayer meeting helps a lot in our journey of holiness.
